May 10, 2020 : 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

New to gardening and want to grow corn? Have you tried growing corn but only ended up with a few sad half-filled ears? Crows keep eating your seed? Don’t know the difference between sweet corn and flint corn? Then have we got the class for you! Join us for this hands-on class
and learn to successfully grow one of the oldest crops in North America.
Topics covered in this class include:
– The major types of corn and how they can be used
– Choosing the right variety for you
– Soil preparation
– Different growing options for the home gardener
– The three sisters garden method
– Seed saving considerations
– Problems you may encounter and some solutions
– When to harvest the different types of corn
In addition to an informational lecture, participants will get to try their hand at three different planting methods to become familiar with methods and tools for growing corn. We will be planting a dent-type corn that you can have a share of at the end of the season. The variety we
will be planting makes good cornmeal, hominy, and grits. Perfect for use in our fall class “More Than Meal: Using Field Corn – Hominy, Grits, Masa and more” Participants are invited to stay for a farm fresh lunch after the class.

*Workshops will be filmed for our local Citizens TV program, and participants will be asked to fill out a photo release form. However, we will respect the privacy of those who do not wish to be filmed during the day.
