In-Depth Vocal Workshop with Alice Gerrard at FCS
September 23, 2017 : 10:00 am - 4:00 pm$75
The Handmade Music School presents an in-depth vocal workshop with Alice Gerrard: Masters and Community in Traditional Music on September 23, 2017 from 10:00am – 4:00pm.
Enjoy a full day of in-depth instruction from the legendary Alice Gerrard. This vocal workshop will begin by delving into the stories and voices of the iconic musicians and culture that paved the way for the traditional music of today. We will then apply that knowledge while learning tunes and songs with an emphasis on style. There will be opportunities to work with others in the class through harmony, duet or trio singing as well as solo work. Geared towards folks who already love to sing, this workshop is an opportunity to dig deeper into traditional music. If you play an instrument at an intermediate level or beyond, please bring it along.
This workshop is on Saturday, September 23rd from 10:00-4:00 at The Floyd Country Store in Floyd, VA. The cost is $75.00 for early bird registration (through September 15) or $85.00 (September 16-22). Lunch is provided by The Floyd Country Store and included in the cost. All participants receive 50% discount toward tickets to The Handmade Music School Old-Time Dance from 7:30-10:30pm.
Alice Gerrard is a singer and songwriter who has performed and advocated for old-time and bluegrass music for over 50 years. She plays old-time fiddle, banjo, and guitar. Alice’s song, “Agate Hill,” was an inspiration for Lee Smith’s latest novel, On Agate Hill. Her most recent recording, Follow the Music, was a finalist for a 2015 Grammy in the Folk category. She is founder of the Old-Time Herald magazine and makes her home in Durham, NC.
